DOB: 247bc
Place of birth: Carthage

FAMILY
Hannibal was the son of Hamilcar Barca. Hamilcar was the general of the Carthagian army. Hannibal had 2 brothers, Hasdrubal II and Mago. He also had a brother-in-law, Hasdrubal, which was married to his oldest sister and he had a younger sister too. Girls were not important back then so I couldn’t find their names.

SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT HANNIBAL'S LIFE
According to the websites I looked up, these are some of the facts I found out about Hannibal.

1. When he was 10yrs old, he asked to go with his father to war against the Romans in Spain. His father took him because he wanted Hannibal to hate the Romans.

2. In 230 bc: Hannibal’s father was killed in battle so his brother-in-law, Hasdrubal took over and Hannibal trained & fought under his command until Hasdrubal was murdered in 221 BC

3. At the age of 26 years old, Hannibal was chosen by the army to be the new commander of it.

4. Hannibal’s first military success was in 219 BC when he took over Saguntum, a roman ally. This started the “Second Punic War”.

5. In 218bc, Hannibal decided to start a land march of almost 50,000 infantry, 9,000 cavalry and 37 elephants, to cross the alps and take control of Italy. This was very hard on his army because of the winter time crossing the Alps. They ran out of food and ate other dead soldiers. When they finally arrived at the edge of Italy, they only had 26,000 troops left and 6,000 of them were cavalry. But, thankfully, the Gauls added their army and brought it up to over 40,000.

6. Hannibal was very creative while fighting. Even though he was outnumbered by Romans, he had his Calvary slowly circle the Romans while they were in battle with the infantry. This caused him to win against the Romans during that battle. Another time, his army was trapped so he waited until it was dark and then tricked the Romans into thinking he was attacking by charging with torches. When the Romans saw the lights, they went up the hillside to meet Hannibal’s army but only found torches tied to horns of a herd of cattle. Since the Romans were all busy, Hannibal’s army all escaped in the other direction.

7. In 202 BC, the battle of Zama took place and Hannibal was defeated. Peace order was signed in 201bc and Hannibal still didn’t like the Romans but everyone was tired of fighting so he was exiled.

8. The Romans still wanted to capture Hannibal and they finally had him surrounded with no way to escape so Hannibal drank some poison that he carried with him. He committed suicide rather than being captured. He was 65 years old when he died.

I feel that future students should study Hannibal because he is important to the Roman history. He was important because he followed in his father’s footsteps, and Hannibal was also a very smart and creative thinker which made him interesting for me to study.
